Print Pricing

    Print Pricing

Know your exact profit before you list, outsource or in-house

Art Price Lab's print pricing calculator shows artists their exact profit margin before setting a price, factoring in print costs, marketplace fees for Etsy, Shopify, Saatchi Art, eBay, PayPal, and more, plus optional wholesale pricing at 50% of retail.

Save an artwork in the main calculator first, then link it here to see its price alongside your print pricing.

    Saves as "Your name, Print".

This is only for your reference, it labels the calculation and doesn't affect the math. Run a separate calculation for each size.

    Typical giclee print costs:8×10 $8–15 · 11×14 $12–22 · 16×20 $18–35 · 18×24 $25–50 · 24×36 $40–80

    Shipping Cost

    $
This is what you pay to ship to your buyer, not to yourself. If using POD or drop-ship, leave this at $0 (the print house ships direct; their cost is already in your Print Cost). If you charge buyers separately for shipping, leave this at $0 too.

Why your profit margin keeps you in business

    Margin funds the next run

Your profit isn't just income, it's what pays for your next order of paper, ink, and supplies. Price too thin and you're constantly breaking even, never building toward more.

40% is the floor, not the ceiling

40% covers a surprise shipping cost, an occasional discount, and a bad batch without putting you in the red. Below 20%, one small problem wipes your profit entirely.

    Prints and originals are different

A common guideline: price prints at 5–15% of your original's selling price. A $1,200 original could justify a $90–180 giclee print, which also leaves room for a healthy margin.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I charge for art prints?

Your listing price should cover your print cost, marketplace fees, and leave a profit margin of at least 20%, and ideally 40% or more. Use the 'target margin' mode above to calculate your required price automatically.

What is a good profit margin for art prints?

40%+ is the target for retail print sales. 20–40% is workable but leaves little room for discounts. Below 20% means you're barely covering costs. The calculator color-codes margins: green (40%+), amber (20–40%), red (under 20%).

How do I calculate Etsy fees for art prints?

Etsy charges roughly 9.5% of the sale price plus $0.45 per order (transaction + payment processing + listing + txn fees). Select Etsy from the marketplace dropdown and the calculator applies it automatically.

Is it cheaper to print art yourself or outsource it?

Outsourcing typically costs $8–35 per print depending on size, but needs no equipment. In-house is lower per-unit at volume but requires a printer and ongoing supplies. The calculator lets you compare both modes.

Can I price art prints for wholesale?

Yes, enable the wholesale toggle to see your profit at 50% of retail (the standard gallery rate). The calculator flags immediately if your wholesale price falls below your costs.

What marketplace has the lowest fees for selling art prints?

Square (2.6%+$0.10 in-person) and Shopify/Stripe (2.9%+$0.30) have the lowest fees. Etsy runs ~9.5%+$0.45. Saatchi Art charges 35% commission but offers collector access that direct platforms don't.
